Reviving the Glory: Why Tamil Schools in Malaysia Need Sporting Facilities

In the not-so-distant past, Tamil Schools in Malaysia were known for producing remarkable athletes who dominated sporting events nationwide. Our schools were the cradle for talents who went on to become celebrated sportsmen and women, proudly representing our community and the country.

Names like Tan Sri Jegathesan Manikavasagam, Josephine Mary Singarayar, Saravanan Govindasamy, Nashatar Singh Sidhuare still spoken with reverence in Tamil households, symbolizing the heights our athletes once reached.

However, this proud tradition has waned in recent years.

The decline in our athletic achievements is not a reflection of our community’s potential but rather a consequence of the missed opportunities due to insufficient resources.

Unfortunately, without access to proper training grounds, equipment, and coaching, these budding athletes cannot reach their full potential. As a result, the once vibrant culture of sports within Tamil Schools has diminished, with fewer students taking up sports and even fewer excelling at national levels.

This is why MAATRAM is committed to changing the narrative. We believe that by investing in state-of-the-art sporting facilities and infrastructure in Tamil Schools, we can reignite the passion for sports and bring back the glory days of our athletes.

Having dedicated sports centers at our schools, equipped with modern facilities, will not only attract more students, it will also encourage more students to participate in sports and also provide them with the necessary tools to excel.

With structured programs at the national level that focus on identifying and nurturing young talents from an early age and proper guidance, coaching, and exposure to competitive sports, we can start to build a pipeline of athletes who have the potential to shine at global stage, particularly at the Olympics.
